Akeeya Umstead Receives Governor’s Volunteer Service Award for Outstanding Community Service

We’re proud to share some exciting news from the heart of our organization—our founder, Akeeya Umstead, has been honored with the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award, one of the highest recognitions for volunteerism in North Carolina.

Nominated by Families Moving Forward and volunteers from the MGB Foundation, presented by Triangle Nonprofit Volunteer Leadership Center for Durham County, this award acknowledges individuals who make significant contributions to their communities through volunteer service. Akeeya’s work through Misstakenid Gives Back Foundation has long reflected a deep commitment to accessible, high-impact community service: from feeding the unhoused to organizing supply drives and educational workshops.

“This recognition is bigger than me,” Akeeya shared. “It’s about what happens when people show up for each other with purpose and heart. I’m so grateful to every volunteer, partner, and supporter who makes this work possible. I am also thankful for my late parents that instilled volunteerism in me”

Although she’s still working toward receiving the prestigious medallion designation, this milestone highlights the impact MGB continues to make across Durham, Roxboro, and beyond.

We hope this moment inspires others to step into service—whether for a day or a season—and join us in building stronger, more connected communities.

Stay connected with us as we continue to grow and serve.

Thank you for being part of our journey.

Celebrating Success and Community at Families Moving Forward 3/22/24!

Friday, March 22, 2024 was a day filled with joy and gratitude as we marked the end of an inspiring journey with the completion of our ‘Success Looks Different For Everyone’ Fireside Chat Pilot Workshop Series at Families Moving Forward. Our participants, who have been the heart and soul of this program, were celebrated in style with a delightful luncheon provided by our generous partners at Alpaca.

As if that wasn’t enough, they were also treated to special gifts from Ruth’s Chris and Linda’s Nails, making the day even more memorable.

Reflecting on the journey, it’s been incredibly rewarding to witness the impact of this professional skill-building workshop. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re proud to have created an experience that resonated so deeply with our community. None of this would have been possible without the support of our partners, volunteers, and the entire Families Moving Forward team. We are immensely grateful for this opportunity to make a difference and look forward to continuing our mission of empowering individuals to define and achieve success on their own terms.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey. Together, we are truly making a difference!

Note: All participants are not featured on the images, all participants that completed the pilot program with attending more than one session received a certificate.

Our Annual Holiday Feed the Homeless/Hungry Event December 7, 2022.

We had the pleasure of hosting our annual feed the homeless and hungry breakfast in Durham, NC on December 7, 2022. We were able to make 180 plates for the community and had a great time doing it.

We would like to thank all of our community sponsors, donors and volunteers for helping us with this successful event.

We hope to continue to have events like these in the future!

september 18, 2021 “cookout”

We were able to have our very first collaboration with a Corporate Volunteer Group from The Holt Team of New American Funding. They were a great group to work with.

Our Menu consisted of a “cookout style” meal. We made 1/4 hamburgers and hotdogs, we had salad, chips, dessert items, water, and soft drinks.

We made 100 plates and were able to give them out to the homeless/hungry population.

The Holt team also provided 75 toiletry bags to give out during lunch.
